APRIL FRESH

After taking March off to recover from Snow Fest in Lake Tahoe, the Space Cowboys are feeling FRESH once again and gearing up to bring the San Francisco massive a very special edition of their monthly event, Friday April 4th, at Shine. Please join us as we honor drum and bass godfather and BBC Radio 1 host, Grooverider (recently sentenced to 4 years in a Dubai jail for possession of a little over 2 grams of marijuana), with a night of the bass heavy, complex, dancefloor-smashing music he’s pushed forward since the dawn of breakbeat hardcore circa 1991.

Everyday Junglists:
Mancub
Kap’n Kirk
Ernie Trevino
bassben
MC: Greg G

If you are interested in signing a petition to the United Arab Emirates to deport Grooverider to the UK and remand him into British custody, which would be a huge improvement in his situation, please follow this link:
GROOVERIDER PETITION

Scarfism announcement

Hello Friendly Person:

I can’t help cringing when it’s Andy Time at the end of 60 Minutes. “You ever notice on airplanes they’re always telling you to put your seat belt on when the planes on the group going 20 miles an hour, but they let you take it off when it’s 35,000 feet in the air going 700 miles an hour? Why is that?” When he opens his mouth there’s the occasional chance he’ll say something insightful, but mostly he just makes me doubt there’s any such thing as growing old gracefully. 99% of the time the codger spins and yammers on topics that are only complex if you’re a retard whose run out of unicorn stickers and paste to eat. What I’m saying is Andy the stereotypical out-of-touch, cranky, rigid crusty fart.

So today I know I’m gonna come off like Andy, but I just gotta ask… When did everyone’s necks get so fucking cold? What the hell is up with all the scarfs? Is there some kind of deep socially-meaningful scarfism movement starting that I ain’t heard about? What the hell?

I got this co-worked who was living in Brooklyn a while, and when he came back from a recent trip he was wearing this knotted little scarf everywhere. Said so was everyone on the East Coast. “All the hip kids are wearing em.” He also mentioned NYC was under several feet of snow. And, okay, it’s a wee bit chilly in the upper Left Coast right about now, and with that temperature drop I’m willing to accept scarfism’s practicalities for the outdoors. But I see people wearing these things inside all the time, and I find myself stifling hostile urges to grab, yank, and give fools a nasty scarf-burn around the neck. I know, it’s fashion, right? But wearing a scarf indoors…? You should wear a helmet and water-wings, too. If you’ve got to wear something around your neck, make it something bold, useful, and hip. Next time you’re heading out for the day, instead of reaching for a whimpy wittle scarf, do like your hype-man Flava Flav. Yeah, you know what Time it is… it’s time to wear a big ass clock around your neck. That’s right. A Big. Ass. Clock. Around your neck. Boooiiiiii!

XO,
8ball at space cowboys dot org

PS: Hella thanks to everyone – I mean EVERYONE – who cried Uncle with us at this year’s Breakfast of Champions. The weather rocked, the Whisper folks rocked, we had a ridiculous amount of rockin’ DJ who, you know… ROCKED. And then there was the rockin’ly lovely people who also contributed to the Rockin’ Good Time™. Space Cowboys does a few events throughout the year – we pimp out the Mog sometimes, and we throw a party here and there – but Breakfast of Champions is really where it’s at for us. It funds most of what we do out on the playa, and it’s what keeps the lights on the rest of the year while we tinker on the Mog. So, again, Hella Thanks to EVERYONE! We heart you, bitches!

PPS: Now, on to upcoming events….

UPCOMING EVENTS

Fresh from the Playa this Friday!

Hello Friendly Cocksucker:

Hey, sorry if this announcement is a bit surly—the aggro glow of Black Sabbath Pancakes still hasn’t worn off, I haven’t gotten used to brushing my teeth with toothpaste instead of tequila yet, I’m still suffering from the playa-lag weariness that results from spending my sleeping hours in a virtual sweat lodge, and my interpersonal skills are on par with those of a schoolyard bully. We had a Metric Fuck Ton™ of fun out there this year, and amazingly I’m already missing all our friends and family from the playa. To help ease our reintegration into the real world, this month’s version of our monthly party Fresh will be a 1 week reunion, where we coach each other on the social skills and etiquette that might’ve been left behind on the playa, swap stories of misery and carnage from the Exodus, or just get hammered:

This Friday, September 7th – FRESH FROM THE PLAYA @ SHINE

Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time (AKA Mighty Breaks, Flaming Lotus Girls, and more!)

Hello Friendly Person:

(Long preamble this morning, so if you’re impatient, skip down for info about Mog appearances at Mighty Breaks tomorrow, the Serpent Mother fundraiser on the 27th, and other goodness.)

Seemed like a good idea at the time. I wish I knew who came up with that phrase, and I’ll bet whoever it was wishes they’d copyrighted the bugger. Think how often it comes up—after Gavin hooked up with his buddy’s wife, right after Chris Daly opens his mouth to says anything, whenever Iraq is mentioned in the White House, and if there’s a God I’m sure he says it whenever he thinks of us. Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time is the only way to explain things like pet rocks, the country meets techno anthem “Cotton-eye Joe”, taking another pill because you’re not “feeling” anything from the first one yet, or any kind of trance ;)

Space Cowboys have done a lot of lame things in our time, and I promise you all of them seemed like a good idea at the time. It’s hard to single out any one moment or act, because they’re all so gloriously lame in their lame, Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time, way. But with Burningman so close, and with discussion in our group turning towards art projects, there is one treasured story that I think is worth sharing. The story of Space Cowboy Byron’s swing. This was somewhere between 98 and 01, the years are all a blur at this point, so let’s just say the theme was The Seven Nebulous Wheels of the Body. Space Cowboy Byron (who has long since retreated into matrimonial seclusion, where his brain cells will be fortunate enough to live out their remaining days and die a natural death) decided that, while our camp had a barter bar, DJs, hot chicks and dangerous playa vehicles, it was missing one thing: a really big swing. So, he went to work. Now, swings have a fairly uniform structure—a couple of supports with something across the top that the swing hangs from is what most of us are familiar with, but Space Cowboy Byron was what you might call a non-conformist. No paired support structures for him, his swing would be a feat of axioms, paradigms and mathematics, or something. He envisioned what ended up looking like a long, narrow upside down V – where the two top tips of the letter were rooted into the ground at an upward angle, that shot the point of convergence up in the air about 30 feet or so, and the swing hung down on a long rope from the apex. He built the whole thing with thick metal pipes, but since he couldn’t find single pieces long enough to achieve the height he was going for, he coupled several together with some sort of threaded joiner. Remember that, because it’s the important part. The swing went up early in the week, and all agreed that he was right – the camp did need a damn swing after all, and for the next few days many of us lazied away the days swaying on what we would later learn was a giant death trap. Flash forward to the Hoe Down. We were having a party, people were dancing, other people were doing weird Burningman shit, customers were trading random crap for dusty booze at the barter bar, and a dozen yards or so away from the dance floor, a couple of hyper-active burner dudes had the bright idea to try red-lining the swing. They’d take running starts at it, they’d stand on the seat upright, they’d flex and grunt, and kick, and keep the swing further and further up. They were doing such a good job at it that soon, they had a small crowd cheering them on. That just encouraged them to push harder, which must’ve seemed like a good idea at the time. But on their most triumphant lurch upward there was an audible crack, and as they hung in mid-air, segments of the pipes separated everything began to plummet. The two guys, having just reached the crest of their swinging, were shot forward from where the 80lbs or so of metal came crashing down, but they still hit the ground hard, and for a moment nothing moved but the cloud of dust that accident kicked up. Because the guys had been swinging so wildly, the crowd had been standing back a respectable distance, so no one else was in what would’ve been the decapitation zone when the metal came down. Space Cowboy Byron and some others jetted over to see if anyone was hurt, particularly the two nummyheads who’d been on the swing, but as soon as they were able two stand they raced off into the night, apparently fearing some sort of retribution for causing the swing’s collapse. A quick investigation into the disaster uncovered that the ends of the pipe, which had been threaded, were now nearly perfectly smooth – the stress caused by the Xtreme-swingers, which was a scenarios not considered in the design’s calculus, had completely stripped the pipes’ threading. And that was the final ride of the Space Cowboy’s Swing-of-Death, which definitely seemed like a good idea at the time.

Save Club Six

Looks like the City is going after Club Six. Considering the state of 6th Street, seems counter productive for the City to target one of the area’s few successful establishments. But it wouldn’t be the first time government did something that didn’t make a lick of sense… Here’s a plea for community support from Angel Cruz, the owner of C6:

I would like to thank all the patrons, promoters, DJs, artists, and employees of Club Six for an amazing six and a half years. We have owned and operated Club Six trouble free for all these years: there have been no ODs, no stabbings, no shootings, and no underage drinking. Now we have summoned by the Entertainment Commission of San Francisco for a hearing to suspend our Place of Entertainment Permit and our After Hours Permit. This would mean no DJs, no performers, and no dancing for one month. This would put us out of business.

The complaint states that Club Six violated the noise ordinance anywhere from three to nine decibels above our limitations. Over the last few years we have invested over $200,000 in soundproofing. We continue to do more sound work to improve our situation. Regardless of the outcome of the hearing, I am committed to meeting the guidelines the city has set forth. I have 20 years left on my lease at Club Six and intend to continue to bring quality entertainment to the community and to the City of San Francisco.

My goal when I bought Club Six was to unite all types of people, music, and cultures together in a place where everyone from all walks of life would be treated equally. It was to create one of the city’s top venues in what was and considered to be one of the city’s most blighted and destroyed neighborhoods: Sixth Street. Do you remember Sixth Street six and half years ago? Friends and business associates told me it couldn’t be done.

Now, Club Six is the largest minority-owned business and employer on Sixth Street. People from all over the Bay, the country, and the world stop off there. Club Six is the anchor of Sixth Street and in many ways the glue that keeps it together. It has been instrumental in helping to bring more businesses to the neighborhood, and I am very proud to say that I can see my vision of successful co-existence between all types of people being fulfilled every day. Club Six is Sixth Street!

Our hearing is scheduled to be held in Room 406 of City Hall on June 5th and will begin between 4:00 and 5:00 pm. Please show your support for us by showing up and saying a word in our behalf. For now, we will continue to do business as usual. Please come down, listen to some incredible music, dance, and enjoy Club Six. We are open! Please forward this to a friend, send us an email of support at clubsix@comcast.net , and cc the community leaders below.

Thank you again for allowing me this wonderful opportunity to own and operate Club Six.

And one more thing (I forgot, but you shouldn't!)

Hello Friendly Person:

Normally when I omit an event from the announcement, I figure it just wasn’t meant to be. But once in a while I am compelled to retrace my steps and make the world right. And that is the case today, because the not only is the event I spaced an landmark opportunity for the community to come together under the banner of peace, joy and happiness, but (perhaps more importantly) it’s also an event I happen to be playing! That’s right—it’s another big opportunity to see ME, so don’t blow it! (Thanks to shOOey for catching my flub…) – 8b

<del>-</del> –

Sunday, May 6th – You Can’t Stop Weird!: Opel’s Offical After Party for the How Weird St. Faire

Because of the downsized number of sound stages How Weird is allowed, we don’t get to rock the How Weird St. Faire this year.
Space Cowboys in the news + events!

From Andrea’s latest SC annoucement:

It has been a busy week in the Space Cowboy administrative offices keeping track of all of the links and shout outs we’ve received from the likes of Wired, CNET, sfgate, all praising the efforts of the talented crews who help put together Yuri’s Night last week down at Moffet Field.

It was not the Unimog’s first appearance at Yuri’s Night, and hopefully not the last. We had a great time rocking on the tarmac while NASA security gave us props on the music and our truck. Not to mention the huge crowd getting down in front of her bass. A big thanks to everyone who worked on, came out, rocked on and supported this night. We hope a greater appreciation for Space was at least one of the things you left with that night.

For those of you who missed it, here a just a few links and photos to check out:

From SFGate:
The Space Cowboys’ UNIMOG has a few hundred people’s bootys on fire just a dozen yards from barbed wire fences.

From Business2.com:
...Space Cowboys – the Bay Area’s hottest DJ posse – were on hand with their Burning Man art car, the Unimog, to lead the dance.

And an article on News.com

A mention in this article on Wired

And also from Wired

And from Scott Beale

And on Flickr – 1

April Space Cowboy Annoucement

Hello Friendly Person,

It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to write up one of our happy, witty, welcome and refreshing little Space Cowboy announcement emails. Last month I spent a couple weeks adventuring in the furthest corners of the Earth, and after that I delved deep into the wondrous and exciting world of project deadlines at work. In the interim my mind has been bubbling over with pithy and irreverent concepts for how to start these announcements, all of them filled with tangential references to obscure events and people that only some of you will know followed by a good humored jab at one of the many silly idiosyncrasies exhibited by our friends in the scene, particularly when their higher than balls on a giraffe. It would’ve been an apt intro, I’m sure, but only a few folks would’ve got it, and I’m sure it would’ve alienated a much larger segment of the audience, so instead I decided to reach out to the lowest common denominator with a simple message I know everyone can get behind: “Eat More Pussy, Bitches!”

Listings for this announcement include info about our next installment of Fresh, held this Friday at Shine, curated this month by Cheeks (and then she hits the road for several months in search of her spirit animal). Also, a new mix from Aaron Jae, and a link to The Geometrist’s mix from back at BoC.

Also, and perhaps MOST IMPORTANT, there’s a message from your favorite Space Cowboy house-rockin’ DJ and Unimog sound engineer, Brad Robinson, about a very troubling matter involving the wrongful conviction and imprisonment in Nicaragua of one of Brad’s friends.

XO,
8ball@spacecowboy.org

UPCOMING EVENTS

Friday, April 6th– FRESH presented by Cheeks

First, let me thank you for taking the time to read this message. I am reaching out to urge you to become involved in the story of Eric Volz – a young man sentenced to 30 years in prison in Nicaragua for a crime he didn’t commit.

I’ve become deeply passionate about this case, as he is a dear family friend and has been an older brother to me as far back as I can remember.

Follow this link and watch his story through video – it tells about the his struggle better than I ever could in writing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YChhOHrFA4

You can learn more about the case and donate to Eric’s legal defense at www.friendsofericvolz.com

Also, if you are a member of MySpace, you can add him as a friend at www.myspace.com/freeericvolz

Again, thank you for taking the time to read this. This has been a personal heartache and terrible injustice.

Forward the video on to everyone you know – and join me in the fight to FREE ERIC VOLZ.”
