Yuri's Night 2011 at NIGHTLIFE

Posted by Andrea Thu, 31 Mar 2011 15:29:00 GMT

The Space Cowboys are thrilled to host NIGHTLIFE at the Academy of Sciences on Thursday April 7th. The Unimog will be in the East Garden and more DJs will be in the East Pavilion of the Academy.

Yuri’s Night is an annual celebration of humanity’s achievements in space. Taking place every April, it commemorates the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s first flight into space in 1961. It also coincides with the anniversary of the firs…t launch of the US Space Shuttle in 1981. This year, the Academy joins the over 100 parties in 40 countries on 6 continents taking part.

The special activities of the night will include:

—Guest Lecture by Mary Roach, author of Packing for Mars, in the African Hall around 8pm. Mary Roach is best known for her novels STIFF, SPOOF, and BONK. How does one prepare for space travel? Space is a world devoid of the things we need to live and thrive: air, gravity, hot showers, fresh produce, privacy, beer. How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can’t walk for a year? What happens if you vomit in your helmet during a space walk? Is it possible for the human body to survive a bailout at 4,000 miles per hour? To answer these questions, space agencies set up all manner of quizzical and startlingly bizarre space simulations – making it possible to preview space without ever leaving Earth. From the space shuttle training toilet to a crash test of NASA’s new space capsule, Packing for Mars takes us on a surreally entertaining trip into the science of life in space and space on Earth.

—Visuals through out the academy and in the Piazza by Pix+Stones

—-A special screening of DAWN OF THE SPACE AGE in the Planetarium. Get your free tix for each screening as soon as you get inside the academy. Planetarium show times are posted near the entrance.

—-A Tour of the Night Sky with the San Francisco Amateur Astronomers on the living roof. Several telescopes focusing on our Moon, Planets and anything else visible from SF. Located on the top floor on the living roof.

—-and of course the amazing music of Space Cowboy DJs:

Brad Robinson, 8ball, Mancub, rrrus, Zach Moore,
Deckard, Erik.Hz, Kapt’n Kirk, Sol, Shissla and shOOey.
