Don't give out nothing for free!

Posted by 8Ball Sat, 28 Apr 2007 01:09:00 GMT

Hello Friendly Person:

It’s that time again, when all our favorite theme camps get all snot-nosed and whining because they just figured out the 2 tons of angle iron they need to convert a ‘74 school bus into a roaming city of light and delight complete with water features and a fully articulating, giant-sized fire breathing lemur costs a lot of a fuck of a lot of money.

Rather than financing projects the American way – by borrowing and stealing (the way government finances the war) – theme camps have to pay as they go, which necessitates the raising of funds, and that means it’s fundraiser season.

I’m not saying I don’t support the arts, hell, I’m supporting them tomorrow night (see below), but what I AM saying how about being a little more creative with the fundraising, huh guys? Sure, throwing a party is a great way to add FUN to your DRAISER, but when that’s the only business model at work we quickly run short of a critical resource: Weekends. And as we get closer to Burning Man, the ratio of fundraisers to weekend increases to a gangbang-like frenzy. In light of this phenomenon, I’d like to suggest we consider new and different ways of getting our endz. In the past I’ve proposed ideas like the “Fundraiser Season Tickets” and a Burner Cookie Drive (think Girl Scouts, but spinning fire). Well, here’s the latest addition to the series: Sliding Scale Sex. Whether with a boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse, random hookup in an alley, friend-with-privileges or with the old lady who lives next-door with privileges, I’m saying it’s time to stop giving it up for free! “But wait,” you might say, “Wouldn’t charging for a taste of my goodies make me a ho?” To which I would say, “No, it does not. Charging for a taste of your goodies makes you a conscientious and responsible member of your soon to be solvent theme camp. And so I applaud you.” If you charge only what’s fair and use a sliding scale so no one is turned away for lack of funds, you’ll ensure a good time is had by all! And of course this pay-for-play concept can be extended to all your social intersections. For example, the next time your friends suggest going out for dinner, run a meter like a cabbie, and charge by the hour with a bump for each course. Make your phone a 999 number. Charge when tourists ask for directions. Don’t do anything without getting paid. It might seem strange at first, but just think of that toilet seat lined with pink fur that will be mounted on a 60-foot tower in the middle of your camp, and you’ll know you did the right thing.

xo,

Space Cowboys in the news + events!

Posted by 8Ball Sat, 21 Apr 2007 18:29:00 GMT

From Andrea’s latest SC annoucement:
It has been a busy week in the Space Cowboy administrative offices keeping track of all of the links and shout outs we’ve received from the likes of Wired, CNET, sfgate, all praising the efforts of the talented crews who help put together Yuri’s Night last week down at Moffet Field.

It was not the Unimog’s first appearance at Yuri’s Night, and hopefully not the last. We had a great time rocking on the tarmac while NASA security gave us props on the music and our truck. Not to mention the huge crowd getting down in front of her bass. A big thanks to everyone who worked on, came out, rocked on and supported this night. We hope a greater appreciation for Space was at least one of the things you left with that night.

For those of you who missed it, here a just a few links and photos to check out:

From SFGate: The Space Cowboys’ UNIMOG has a few hundred people’s bootys on fire just a dozen yards from barbed wire fences.

From Business2.com: ...Space Cowboys – the Bay Area’s hottest DJ posse – were on hand with their Burning Man art car, the Unimog, to lead the dance.

And an article on News.com

A mention in this article on Wired

And also from Wired

And from Scott Beale

NASA Raves

Posted by hilife Tue, 17 Apr 2007 04:31:00 GMT

The Cowboys have been part of some pretty cool things for sure, leading the SF Love Parade three years in a row or increasing the risk of an avalanche at Squaw are just a couple that come to mind. But this past Friday, April 13th, 2007 has to be one of the more surreal ones. In honor of Yuri’s Night, the NASA Ames Research Center down at Moffett Field flung the doors wide open on the 211 Hangar and invited an eclectic mix of the science/tech community to mingle with Burner culture. Feeling a bit like a science fair and a lot like the playa with robots, art and a couple big planes for the hell of it, the night was more fun than an erector set on acid!

The Mog was in full effect on the tarmac and anytime she’s out, there’s always lots of curious bystanders peeking their heads in, asking questions and commenting on how neat she is. The difference this time was a lot of those inquisitive strangers were NASA officials and security which made it that much cooler. The general good spirits of everyone at NASA was impressive, they all seemed to have a great sense of humor and were very welcoming to the revelers. As for the party itself, the Cowboys “sound” was a great counter-balance to the headliners Plaid and Tefon tel Aviv, who are a little more chill than our standard fare. Once we were allowed to go full blast with her after midnight, it was pretty sweet to see just as many people shakin’ their thang in front of the Mog as there were inside the hangar.

The Cowboys have had close ties to Yuri’s Night since it’s inception, due to the fact that HellDog’s own sister Loretta and husband George are the founders. Needless to say we were more than excited for an excuse to party at NASA! It was very cool to be part of such a unique event and it sounds like this wont be the last time.

Here’s to you Yuri Gagarin, the original Space Cowboy!
