hello friendly person!

i like music. i like good music. don't we all? "good" is, of course, a little bit subjective, right? as a dj, i certainly recognize i can't make everyone on the dancefloor happy and i most certainly respect other people's taste in music. over the past two years or so, in the name of diversity, i've been trying to build up my non-electronic music collection for my listening pleasure. but what does that mean, non-electronic (in air quotes)? these days, a lot of the tunes out there now have some electronic aspect to it, in varying degrees. thursday night i went to see miike snow at the independent, who rocked the house big time. they had 6 members of the band, and at any given time, sound was coming from vocals, two guitars, a drum set, 2 keyboard/synthesizers, and a dj of sorts who mixed and twisted sounds live as they played. it got me thinking about a friend of mine, who has great taste in music, but she absolutely REFUSES to go to any parties
with "dance" music, or better described as the music you might hear at, say... a space cowboys party! when i asked her why she doesn't like "that" kind of music, she said to me, "it's boring and it all sounds the same to me". i wonder if the "dance" aspect has more to do with the fact that one dj is playing all the music, versus a band that's playing together, even if the output is still electronic. she says she loves hot chip but how can she claim that isn't "electronic" music... does 5 guys standing in front of synthesizers make a band? i'm just sayin'...

happy friday!
