Hello Friendly Person:
I spent the last couple weeks on the Yucatan helping a
community-based tourism company develop their
business. Their focus on sustainable practices got me
thinking, maybe there are some lessons in
sustainability that could be applied to the party
community. For example, flyers; tens of thousands of
flyers get passed out and discarded in the city each
week. Instead, everyone could just carry around a
small wipeboard, and promoters could just scribble
down the details as people leave (promoters: don't
worry about penmanship, 9 out of 10 people aren't
coming to the party anyway). And adding a small
chalkboard to a car's windshield means no more flyers
under the wipers! Recycling empty bottles at the end
of the night is always a good practice, but even
better, how about people all bring their own glasses
(I recommend the 48oz Super Big Gulp size)! Sure, we'd
obsolete a few barbacks, but think of all the water
wasted washing and rewashing shotglasses, or all the
plastic cups tossed at the end of the night. With the
money they'd save club owners could bring on an extra
bartender or two to pour more drinks. And how about
all that energy being wasted on the dancefloor? Outfit
each person with a human motion power generator, and
we could turn all that flailing and ass shaking into
juice for the subs! The best way sustainable practice,
though, is to spend your money at the local level.
Anyone can pay $30 to get into Wal-Club or Partybucks,
but it actually means something when you pay $5 to
dance to your neighbor's beats. This Friday, for
example:
FRIDAY JULY 7th - MIGHTY MOG!
SPACE COWBOYS UNIMOG FUNDRAISER at MIGHTY with Simply
Jeff & Myagi, and all your fav Space Cowboy DJs...
Andrea says, "This is the big one folks, the one that
will help the Mog continue to operate in infamy. Our
tireless cowboy crew has already started the playa
fires burning, working round the clock to get our baby
ready for the playa. Our Unimog is growing up,
graduating to bigger & grander sights. The college
tuition lingers, and her makeover is about to break
the bank. HELP US and we help you. Your support
ensures years and years of Unimog FUNctionality for
everyone. All of the proceeds go towards overhauling
the UniMog, which is a staple in many of the outdoor
street festivals here in the city. For the last two
years, the Mog has led the Love Parade and is a
prominant feature at Decompresssion, How Weird and
Carnival."
